Welcome to the Hekla Persians web site!

Hekla Persians Cattery - the home of Happy, Healthy, Intelligent cats and kittens.

We are NZ Cat Fancy Registered Breeders.

We breed Persian kittens that are:

We have been breeding these little animals since 1994 and we enjoy every minute of it!

We started with one black Persian female cat - who was a colourpoint carrier and subsequently kept two of her daughters - one a tortoiseshell and the other a seal tortoiseshell point (Seal "Tortie" Point)

Our girl's official name was "Sharella Cleo", but we liked Tamsin better, so Tamsin she was. Our lovely foundation queen Tamsin is no longer with us. She died on 29 May 2008. She would have been 15 on her next birthday. However, her legacy lives on; in the genetics of her progeny and the loving and intelligent temperament of her descendants. We will miss our great feisty Top Cat, who made us laugh, made us cry and gave us a line of strong and healthy cats.

One of them Victoria Plumbeautiful - sadly was killed by a speeding car on our Street. But her nieces, Crawling Grass and Athena Plum carry on with the great kittens that are what Hekla Persians are all about!

Our goal is to breed kittens with great looks, good health and fantastic personalities. To that end, we live for improving their colours, health and ensuring that our home is their home and that they are happy here. We primarily breed pet kittens, as we don't have extremely 'high nosed - very short-faced' Persians, which are preferred by some breeders.

Please note: Hekla Persians has relocated but... we are not country cats (and people for that matter!). Our Hekla Persians have not settled here and neither have we (well, me anyway!). So, we are re-relocating back to the BIG Smoke! (Auckland). The climate here is not suitable for Persians coats (what a tangle!). I admit: we made a mistake. Too far from amenities, NO VET! Some of our young ones have been re-homed, but we still have some young cats available that are already desexed, so a solemn promise of a very good home is all we ask. I am taking some updated photos of these young cats and will definitely put them up within this week.
These are some lovely young adult cats ranging in ages from 2 to 3 years still available now. Watch this space!
Contact us for photos and details of these cats.
We now know it was not a good move, as our health was affected (especially with the dampness of the Waikato river near by). We are always a work in progress, but now more that ever, we want to get it right for our cats. Until we do, we are taking a season/year off from breeding our beloved Hekla Persians and creating a healthier environment for them and future generations of Hekla Cats and Kittens. We are minimising our breeding cats down to 3, as we are striving for "quality and not quantity" as economic times are harsh and we want to just have a small amount of kittens next year to make things affordable for all.
New photos of some of our young adults will be updated soon or send us an email at heklacat@orcon.net.nz and we will send you some photos of these lovely cats, or more information about them.

News Flash! We are moving soon and require homes for some of our young Persians. They have been neutered/spayed, vaccinated, wormed etc. and they require good and permanent homes. Please contact us on 09 232 6975 or 021 181 7670 (text) or email us for further details and photos. These young adult Persians are purebreed and very loving. PLEASE NOTE: they are 2 - 3 years old: Colours - Black boys and girl, Blue Smoke boy, Blue girl, Red boys, Tortie girls. Special conditions apply and we would not be charging anything to those who have the "right" homes for our beloved cats.

Now more historical data:
Here is a photo of Ch Athena Rose - our Seal 'Tortie' Point.
Our great lady, Athena Rose, has now retired. She is fine after her fall and subsequent loss of her babies. We are richer for all that she has given us, her progeny, her friendship and her love; and are looking forward to having her with us for a long, long time as a part of our family. We are grateful to our terrific vet: Dr Mary Austin, for her sensitive, professional and faultless care of our Hekla Persians, which is why our Athena Rose is with us today.
More on our News Page a little later this week.

A photo of Just Our Hero, as he is today!

Just had to show off his stunning eyes, even though this photo does not do justice to his size, as he is a very big lad!
Still lovely and loving, our boy has had a season "off" his "job", but as ever he is still our pet boy (doesn't spray!) and lives in my office. However, I am sure he will be well able to do his "job" next year, as a stud boy! What a honey he is!

More news:

We now accept Mastercard and Visa for all deposits and payments from our kitten and cat buyers.

And she is here!

We are proud to still have Strathern Destiny, in our breeding program our Black girl. Born on New Year's Day 2007, this super affectionate girl is a cuddly armful.

Wonderful nature, great cobby body, round bright eyes (the photos don't do them justice), healthy, big and beautiful, we appreciate this loely girl staying in our lives as breeding queen to improve our breeding lines, and wish to thank her breeder for agreeing to sell her to us.

Hekla Persians are on the Move! More news to be posted shortly, as time allows.

Suzie, our shorthaired ex-queen is now spayed and is up for adoption soon. Keep checking back on our Retiring Queens' page for photos and information on this great girl!
Some ladies as our Lady in Red- won't go anywhere; as they would not settle very well, and are happy to stay here with no problems sharing their home with the others. However, some like our :Periwinkle, would benefit greatly from a one-cat-only home.

Click here for - Our Hekla - how it all began - our love of cats, 'famous cats' throughout our life, the Barn cat (our boy Freyr), Cats in Iceland. On a sad note, our Barn cat who we adopted out to Asgeir's brother, died in 2007. He lived to be 21 years old. Never a vet visit, never ill, just one day, he didn't wake up. Rest in peace, Freyr.
